Letter from Action fro
Mosul to newspaper editors Dear Sir, Few broadsheets, or the
media in general, have given space to the ancient city of Mosul (Nineveh) in
northern Iraq other than to report on the current 'final battle for Mosul',
the military assault and political repercussions. None have highlighted
the possibility of the world losing one of its most ancient cities; it’s
architecture, history and culture, much of which is yet to be excavated.
Neither, and equally as important, has publicity been given to the
plight of the population of Mosul and the Nineveh Plains. A situation has
been allowed to develop whereby this essentially Arab city, which has always
been home to a multi-ethnic, multi-religious population, and the
surrounding areas has essentially come under the control of the Kurdish
Peshmerga who claim Mosul as part of an expanded Kurdistan.
The very fact that the international community has stood silently by
and watched this is deplorable. To see it to its logical end is
unthinkable. Dr Ismail K Jalili |
