Ancient Mosul (Al Mawsil)    الموصـــــــــــــــــــــل عبــــر التأريـــــــــــــــخ

Mosul is a city in the largest city in north Iraq situated on the banks of the Tigris River.  The city originally was on the right bank of the river and has expanded to left bank to enclose the ruins of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. It has been suggested that it was built on the site of an earlier Assyrian fortress.  Mosul (the link) succeeded Nineveh as the Tigris bridgehead between the west and the east. It linked Syria and Anatolia with Persia. By the 8th century CA it had become the principal city of northern Mesopotamia.

Western travellers visited Mosul included Emile Botta, a French archaeologist, Austen Henry Layard, British who unearthed Assyrian civilization at Khorsabad and Nineveh in the 1840s the devout remembered their prophet Zephaniah 2:13: Gertrude Bell visited Al Mosul and reported this in her book Amurath to Amurath in which she describes a meeting with one of the nobilities. The famous writer, Agatha Christae, lived in Mosul whilst her second husband, an archaeologist, was involved in the excavation in Nimrod.
