News from Mosul. 
On 15 August, I took my Daughters Najma, and Aya's mother with me to the hospital, in order to make the medical examination for Najma prior to present her paper to the college.
About 10 AM we hear a loud sound of explosion, but we can check each other by cellphone we didn't know where the explosion.
On returning home we have to cross the bridge to the other side of the city, we did so, but ofter that we face a block in all the roads leading home. 

I became an expert in the side ways and detours, but all the efforts failed to take us home. We took our lunch in an popular restaurant and then spend the time in one of my brothers house. The problem was with my older daughter who is still breast feed her second baby Mo'men, three months old Aya's brother.

Later and before the dark we managed to go home. 
The reason for this problem is in the following report.

- A major explosion in Mosul this morning just before noon. This was the result of a car bomb in a trailer driven by a suicide bomber before noon today targeting the headquarters of the Kurdish National Union in Al-Ta'meem district east of Mosul. This resulted in heavy casualties with some 20 to 30 people injured in addition to a large number of dead. The severity of the explosion, which hit a nearby petrol station, led to the collapse of several nearby buildings in the neighborhood, hence the large numbers of bodies, many are still under the rubble. At least 17 cars were burnt whilst queuing at the petrol station, queues now are a normal occurrence given the fuel crisis which has been biting hard over the last few months in Mosul .

Next day I went to the hospital as usual, but this time all the five bridges of Mosul were closed in front of vehicles, so we have to cross the bridge on feet, it was very hot day and the distance was to long but we did it.
Again there was a reason for that and it is in the following report.

- Several parts of the right bank of Mosul witnessed arm confrontation between gunmen and the police this morning. The clashes lasted about 2 hours in Al-Amel, Mosul Al-Jadida, Souq Al-Ghanem and other areas. A source in Nineveh police constabulary stated that the local authority closed the 5 bridges across Tigris in Mosul as a precaution. The police was able to kill 5 gunmen and arrest 6 others in addition to destroying several of the gunmen cars and confescating large amount of arms and ammunitions. 
- In Al-Nabi Younis (Profit Jona) district, left bank of Mosul, an explosive device went off targeting an American Convoy. The area was soon surrounded by US forces sealing the area, hence the inability to know the number of causalities and the amount of damage caused.


Today afternoon A Doctor whose clinic are opposite of mine, are kidnapped in the middle of the day from his clinic. The kidnapper put him in the rear luggage box of the car and run a way, fortunately the door open accidentally while the car was very fast, he jump from the car and injured his head and may be some of his ribs.

Those are not a typical days of our life, but samples of what the Americans Freedom and Democracy brought to us.

A car bomb driven by a suicide bomber exploded today on an Iraqi Army patrol unit wounding 6 people among whome 2 of the patrol unit personnel.

- An explosive device was ignited on a US patrol unit in Al-Wahda district, Left bank of Mosul. One armed vehicle was burned down but human loses were not known as a result of the security imposed on the areas by the US forces after the explosion.
- Gunmen attacked a check point manned by the police at Hammam Al-Aleel high way  killing 6 people among whom were 5 policemen.

Setting a car on fire, Civilians killed, igniting an explosive device, finding unidentified body.
- Eyewitnesses confirmed today that they saw a police car on fire at the Al-Thwra Crossing near Hakouri House in the right bank of Mosul. 
- Two civilians were killed in Al-Tabana region in Mosul..
- Eyewitnesses reported a security seage imposed by the US forces in Al-Ghabat district in Mosul blocking the road leading to Al-Qusoor district near Al-Andulis district, left bank of Mosul. At 9.00 am US forces ignited an explosive device place at the side of the road.
-Also according to eyewitnesses the bodies of a man shot in the head with his leg tied up and his eyes folded was found at Al-Sina'a crossing, left bank of Mosul today.

Most of businesses and workshops in the Industrial Zone have almost ceased to function as a result of the deterioration in the state of security in the city. They have been exposed to endless of harassments, arrests, searches, raids, etc whenever there is any explosion in the area or a fall of a mortar in addition to the haphazard arrest to the owners of the businesses and their workers. The number of customers has droped considerably at a time it was the busiest part of Mosul

أصبح الكثير من أصحاب المهن والورش في المنطقةالصناعية بالجانب الشرقي من مدينة الموصل تتعقد عليهم أمور الحياة بعد أن شهد واقععملهم تدهورا كبيرا بسبب تردي الأوضاع الأمنية وغلق الطرق وكثرة الاعتقالاتالعشوائية بعد كل مواجهة او سقوط قذيفة هاون او انفجار عبوة ناسفة في المنطقة التيعادة ما تشهد اعمال مسلحة بشكل يومي منذ أكثر من أربع سنوات والتي أدت بالنتيجة الىانخفاض ملحوظ في أعداد السيارات التي تقصد تلك المنطقة التي كانت في يوم ما من اكثرالمناطق حركة ونشاطا , يقول المواطن عبدالله ابراهيم ( صاحب ورشة لتصليح السيارات ) : عندما تتجول الآن في الحي الصناعي تكاد لا تصدق ما تشاهده من انعدام الحركة وقلّةاعداد السيارات التي تقصد المنطقة لغرض التصليح او الإدامة وهو ما أدى إلى إلحاقالضرر البالغ بأصحاب الورش والمهن والعمال الذين يسترزقون من العمل في المنطقةالصناعية خصوصا في ظل الأوضاع الاقتصادية الصعبة التي تمر بها المدينة وكثرةالعاطلين عن العمل بسبب استفحال مشكلة البطالة , اما ابو اكرم ( كهربائي سيارات ) فيناشد السلطات بالعمل على خلق الأجواء المناسبة التي تساعد في انتعاش المنطقة التييعمل فيها المئات من المواطنين الذين يعيلون عوائلهم مضيفا : نطالب المحافظ بإعادةفتح الطرق والشوارع المغلقة في المنطقة والتي أدت الى امتناع الكثير من أصحابالسيارات عن المجيء الى المنطقة.

- An explosive device targeting an American Army convoy went off today 25/8/2007 in Al-Ba'ath district, north east of the City of Mosul One civilian was injured. Losses among the US Army are not known.
- Another explosive device went off targeting an Iraqi Army unit also wounding one civilian.
- An explosive device went off in Al-Masaref (banking) district, this time a police patrol was the target. Four police personnel were wounded.

Mortar bomb fell on Bab Toub district in the centre of Mosul today wounding a civilian.

An explosive device targeted a police unit today in Al-Islah area west of Mosul wounding 2 policemen, according to a source in Nineveh Police.

Car bomb in AL-Farooq district in the centre of the City of Mosul today.
A car parked at the side of the road exploded today targeting a police patrol. Two persons were killed among whom a policeman and a civilian. Twelve more were also wounded. Two unknown bodies were also found by the police in the district.

Assassination of Khaled Othman, a leading figure in the Islamic Party.
Unknown gunmen assassinated today Khaled Othman in Al-Kafa'at dirstrict, north of Mosul. The deceased was born in Mosul in 1967 and has MA in Law. He served in several positions including the head of Left Bank Branch of the Islamic party and member in the public relations in the main head quarters. He also served as a chairman of several NGOs.

Two bodies found in Mosul today
The police found 2 unidentified bodies under the Al-Sukker district tunnel according to a source in the police.

Police found today an arm depot in an unoccupied house in Al-Wahda dirstrict, Tellaafer according to a source in the police.

A suicide bomber killed in his car in Tellaafer today 4/8/2007
Nineveh Police killed a suicide bomber in his car before entering the targeted queue of car at a petrol filling station. Two people were killed in the incident including a policeman according to Brigadier Ibrahim Al-Jubouri, Commissioner of Tellaafer Police.

Suicide bombers kill 200 in northern Iraq

In a savage onslaught on the pre-Islamic Yazidi sect, four suicide bombers driving fuel tankers blew themselves up in northern Iraq killing 200 people and wounding 300 others, according to local officials. 

The attacks took place in the Sinjar district 70 miles west of Mosul and targeted houses of the Yazidi, a 350,000-strong secretive community whose beliefs are a mixture of Zotroastrian and Manichean beliefs predating Islam and Christianity.

The death toll was the highest in Iraq since mortar fire and car bombs killed 215 people in Sadr City, the impoverished Shia suburb of Baghdad, on 23 November last year. One source said that there were two explosions in an area of dense housing in Sinjar which then 'came under a mortar attack following the double explosion.' It is not clear why the Yazidi should have been singled out for the coordinated assault though their non-Islamic beliefs would be enough to lead an attack by al Qaida in Iraq. They are also ethnic Kurds who speak Kurdish which would also make them a target. The public lynching of a Yazidi girl who converted to Islam in order to marry her Muslim Kurdish boyfriend led sectarian strife earlier this year. Gunmen took 23 Yazidi textile workers from a bus near Mosul and shot them all dead after telling non-Yazidi workers to go home.

At least thirty houses were destroyed in the attacks, the worst of which took place Siba Sheikh Kidar housing compound west of Mosul. Two more explosions took place in the Kar Izir area two miles to the south. A local source said that "people are in a panic while hospitals are still rushing people to Sinjar hospital." Inside the hospital corridors were crowded with wounded.

Dhakil Qassim, the mayor of Sinjar said that al Qaida in Iraq were behind the bombings citing Kurdish government intelligence reports. The Sinjar area is largely under Kurdish control and is claimed as part of the historic Kurdish homeland from which Saddam Hussein sought to drive them.

"This is a terrorist act and the people targeted are poor Yazidis who have nothing to do with the armed conflict," Mr Qassim said. "Al Qaida fighters are very active in this area near the Syrian border." US helicopters took some of the injured to the nearby Kurdish city of Dohuk. Ghassan Salim, 40, a teacher, said: "We went to the hospital and the wounded told us about the attacks. I gave blood. I saw many maimed people with no legs or arms. Many were left in the hospital garage or in the streets because the hospital is too small." The attacks on the Yazidis were the culmination of a day of violence spectacular even by Iraqi standards during which an American helicopter crashed west of Baghdad killing five crew. Although US helicopters have been shot down the losses are not high given the numbers in use and are far below the numbers ost in Vietnam.

In the centre of the capital 50 gunmen in dressed in Iraqi security force uniform and using 17 official vehicles calmly kidnapped a deputy oil minister from the State Oil Marketing Organization. A further three director generals at the ministry were abducted.

A crucial bridge between Baghdad and the northern capital was destroyed when a suicide bomber driving a fuel truck blew himself up while crossing it. The explosion, which killed ten people and wounded six, took place at Taji, just north of Baghdad. Insurgents have recently targeted bridges in and around the capital.

The US 'surge' is not succeeding in reducing the overall level of violence despite the revolt of Sunni tribal leaders against al Qaida. There is also an escalating conflict between the American military and the main Shia militia, the Mehdi Army. The US has been seeking to put al Qaida in Iraq under enough pressure to prevent the use of massive suicide bombs against Shia civilian areas. This inevitably produces a rash of revenge killings of Sunni.

Sectarian warfare is continuous wherever the two communities live close together. Some 15 bodies were found in Baghdad yesterday and a further 15 Sunni were dumped near a petrol station in Khalis, a largely Shia town in embattled Diyala province.

The Yazidis

The Yazidi minority in Iraq say they have often faced discrimination. In April gunmen shot dead 23, factory workers from the sect in the northern city of Mosul.

There are believed to be around 350,000 Yazidis in total, mainly ethnic Kurds, with many of them living near Mosul, but also in Armenia, Georgia, Syria, Iran, Turkey and Russia. Their origins are lost in ancient history, but the word has been translated as 'divine' and 'god', from the word Yezdan.

They believe in a creator god and that seven angels look after the world, the leader of which is a peacock-angel. Some Muslims and Christians say Yazidis worship a 'fallen angel', but the religion believes the peacock to be a source of good.

Car-Bombs Factory in Mosul
Nineveh Police discovered a factory for the production of car bombs in the Al-Sina'ie (Industrial) zone in the Al-Karama Industrial district. The workshop contained 3 cars-bpmbs ready to ignite.

General Wathiq Al-Hamdani escaped an assassination attempt today 1/8/2007 when an explosive device blew up close to his procession when passing near the River Police at the centre of Al-Ghabat region, left bank of Mosul. Four of his team were injured including 2 policemen.

Unknown gunmen attacked today 1/8/2007 Akrem Abdul-Rahman, a postgraduate student at the Faculty of Agriculture, Mosul University. The murder took place near the tunnel of the Fifth Bridge.
