	Iraq: US military extends its offensive into the northern city of Mosul By James Cogan 30 January 2008 Since January 1, American and Iraqi government forces have been conducting a major offensive, codenamed Phantom Phoenix, against Sunni Arab-based resistance groups in northern Iraq. Operations have already been conducted in the province of Diyalah and in the Arab Jabour district to the south of Baghdad. They have been characterised by some of the heaviest aerial bombardments of the war and the mass round-up of anyone accused of being members or sympathisers of the Sunni fundamentalist organisation which calls itself Al Qaeda in Iraq. US authorities have seized upon the activities of this outfit to designate all Sunni-based resistance to the foreign occupation as terrorism. Rear Admiral Gregory Smith told the media on January 20 that the latest offensive had already resulted in the death of 121 “terrorists” and the detention of 1,023. The killing and repression is now being extended to Mosul, an ancient metropolis on the banks of Tigris River and Iraq’s second largest city after Baghdad. Mosul is the capital of Ninevah province, which borders Syria to the west, the Kurdish autonomous region to the north and east and the predominantly Sunni Arab provinces of Anbar and Salah Ad Din to the south. It had an estimated pre-war population of 1.7 million. Sunni Arabs comprised the majority, but lived alongside large Kurdish, Turkomen and Assyrian Christian communities. The US occupation has faced continual resistance in Ninevah since the 2003 invasion. A number of Sunni Arab resistance groups and tribes in Anbar province and Baghdad struck deals with the US military during 2007 and ended attacks on American and Iraqi government forces, but that has not taken place in Mosul. The predominantly Sunni districts of the city remain guerilla strongholds. The US military alleges that many of the fighters in Mosul fled from the areas where American troop numbers were built up as part of the Bush administration’s surge, or where the Sunni “citizens groups” were established and began collaborating with the occupation. Some 5,000 US troops and as many as 18,000 Iraqi government troops are expected to take part in securing Mosul. Over 2,000 predominantly Kurdish troops of the Iraqi Third Division, who have been fighting alongside American forces in Baghdad, have been redeployed to the area. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared last weekend: “Today our forces are moving towards Mosul. What we have planned in Nineveh will be final. It will be a decisive battle.” Difficult urban counter-insurgency fighting is being anticipated. An American commander in the area, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Simmering of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, told journalists this week: “The thing about the insurgency in Mosul is that there are many different facets. This is going to be a long, protracted push by coalition forces and more importantly by Iraqi security forces to reestablish security. If you’re looking for one big culminating event, you’ll never see it. I call this the ‘campaign for Mosul’.” The initial stages of the US push into the city began in the southern suburbs a week ago. On January 23, an insurgent arms cache hidden in an abandoned building in a residential area exploded as government troops closed in. The massive explosion, which left a 10-metre deep crater, devastated surrounding homes, killed at least 60 people and wounded more than 280. Iraqi authorities immediately labelled it a terrorist atrocity, but its cause is not clear. Locals appear to have blamed the government security forces. The Ninevah provincial police chief, Salah Mohammed al-Jubouri, was stoned by a distraught crowd when he visited the site the next day and assassinated by a suicide bomber as he attempted to flee to his vehicle. On Monday, five US troops were killed by a roadside bomb and the rest of their unit engaged by heavy small arms fire while attempting to secure an insurgent-controlled mosque in south-eastern Mosul. The guerillas retreated before they could be attacked by US air strikes and a ground assault on the mosque by government soldiers. The casualties pushed the US death toll for January to 36 and the overall number of American deaths since the invasion to 3,940. Dozens of government soldiers and police have also been killed this month. A police patrol was ambushed on Monday, leaving two dead. Over the coming days and weeks, US and government troops will have to move into areas in which insurgents have had years to entrench themselves, lay booby traps and conceal firing positions. A spike in US casualties is likely, particularly when Iraqi guerillas are forced to make a stand. In Diyala province, however, the main insurgent tactic has been to avoid frontal clashes with the vastly better equipped and armoured American forces. Instead, they have sought to melt into the civilian population, relying on the popular sympathy to live to fight another day. The result is a frustrating, nerve-wracking and never-ending war for the American forces. In Diyala province alone this month, according to US general Mark Hertling, his troops have had to disarm 386 roadside bombs, 28 car bombs and 38 “house” bombs. Fifteen soldiers have been killed, including six who died when they entered a booby-trapped building. In the Arab Jabour region south of Baghdad—an area of small villages, irrigation channels and orchards—the US air force is carrying out repeated bombardments to try and clear roadside bombs and mines. Thirty targets were struck on January 20 with 20,000 pounds of high explosive bombs, following the pounding of 99 targets between January 10 and 16 with over 99,000 pounds of bombs. US tactics increasingly rely on massive air strikes, combined with the indiscriminate detention of suspected resistance fighters. According to figures provided in the Pentagon press briefing by Rear Admiral Smith this month, the US military detained 8,800 alleged “Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists” during 2007 and killed 2,400. These figures do not include the thousands of alleged Sunni nationalist fighters or anti-occupation Shiite militiamen who were detained or killed. As many as 35,000 prisoners are being held in US-run camps inside Iraq and a similar number in Iraqi government facilities.

	مقتل 5 جنود أمريكيين في الموصل قُتل خمسة جنود أمريكيين في الموصل بشمال العراق اليوم الاثنين حسبما قال بيان للجيش الأمريكي. وذكر البيان إن الجنود كانوا ضمن دورية عسكرية انفجر فيها لغم مزروع بإحدى الطرق، وبعد ذلك تعرض أفرادها لهجوم بالأسلحة النارية الصغيرة. وذكرت وكالة أنباء رويترز إن الجيش والشرطة العراقية قد اشتبكا في معارك مع أنصار القاعدة في الضاحية التي تعتبر معقلا للتنظيم في شرق الموصل. Zanjili hours after the huge explosion

Mosul, Jan 25, (VOI)- The Sunni Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) said on Friday that it held Iraqi and U.S. troops responsible for the bombings in al-Zanjili neighbourhood in western Mosul, which left hundreds of people killed or wounded on Wednesday.

Unidentified gunmen blew up a building in al-Pepsi street in Zanjili region in western Mosul.
The Ninewa provincial council chief said on Thursday that the attacks in al-Zanjili, western Mosul, on Wednesday had claimed the lives of 36 civilians and wounded 169 others.
"U.S. troops, in coordination with Iraqi security forces, detonated a building in al-Zanjili neighborhood using barrels of explosives," the AMS said in a statement.
"The forces warned locals and evacuated nearby houses," it noted, underlining that they detonated the building, destroying around 100 nearby houses.
The accusation leveled by the AMS coincides with the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's order to form a committee to investigate the incident.
For his part, Commander of the fourth brigade of the 2nd division, Brigadier Nour el-Din Hussein, denied these accusations, explaining that the forces, after receiving information from one of the detainees, rushed to the building with the bomb squad team and found lots of wires and bags of TNT.
"We immediately told the bomb squad that the building was booby-trapped. Our soldiers also informed the residents to leave their houses as soon as possible," he said.
He denied the presence of U.S. forces before and during the explosion, pointing out that "after getting information, we contacted the U.S. bomb squad to defuse the bombs, but they arrived 15 minutes after the explosion."
Commander of the 2nd division of the Iraqi army Brigadier Mutaa al-Khazragi told the VOI "we got information from al-Qaeda gunman. We rushed to the area and found the building's warehouses filled with TNT and the building was booby-trapped."
"We ordered residents to leave their houses immediately, but the gunmen detonated the building remotely," he added.
Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

	Curfew imposed on Mosul Nineveh TV announced that the Governor of Mosul has imposed a curfew on Mosul from this morning following an attempt by a suicide bomber to kill the Commander of Nineveh Police. Five of his security guard, including a ranked police officer, were killed in the explosion. The Commander was taken to the American Military hospital. Total score of casualties in Al-Zanjili explosion The total score of people killed in Al-Zanjili explosion, west of Mosul, last night rose to to 146 wounded and 18 dead. Four mortar bombs fell randomly on Al-Zuhoor residential district in Mosul. No figures available yet on casualties. Several explosions and armed clashes were reported this morning in Al-Noor district and AL-Sina'a east of Mosul. The number of casualties is unknown.
	عاجل..عاجل..و.أ.عراقيون-الموصل(فرض منع تجول في مدينة الموصل) أعلن تلفزيون نينوى والفضائية الموصلية بأن محافظ نينوى فرض حظر التجوال في المدينة صباح اليوم الخميس 24/1 على أثر قيام شخص يرتدي حزام ناسف بتفجير نفسه على السيد مدير شرطة محافظة نينوى مما أدى إلى مقتل ضابط شرطة برتبة ملازم أول وأربعة أفراد من حماية مدير الشرطة الذي أصيب بجروح بليغة ونقل على أثرها إلى مستشفى المطار الأمريكي وعلى صعيد متصل ارتفعت حصيلة شهداء انفجار العمارة الواقعة في الزنجلي غرب مدينة الموصل التي سقطت ليلة أمس23/1 إلى 146 جريح و18 شهيد. وفي السياق ذاته سقطت أربع قذائف هاون في حي الزهور شمال شرق مدينة الموصل على المساكن بصورة عشوائية مساء يوم أمس 23/1 ولم تعرف الخسائر. وكذلك سمع صباح هذا اليوم عدة انفجارات واشتباكات في منطقة حي النور والصناعة في شرق مدينة الموصل ولم تعرف الخسائر لوقت أعداد هذا الخبر.

	- Three civilians leaving Al-Ameen Mosque in Eden district, left bank of Mosul were killed by security forces. - Police killed a suicide bomber who targeted their patrol in Mithaq. Two civilians were also wounded in the incident.
	خاص- و.أ.عراقيون- الموصل(مقتل 3 مصلين خارجين من جامع الأمين في حي عدن ومقتل انتحاري في حي الميثاق) علمت وكالة أنباء عراقيون اليوم الأحد الموافق 20 كانون الثاني 2008 ان ثلاثة مصلين خارجين من جامع الأمين في حي عدن بالجانب الأيسر من مدينة الموصل، قتلوا فجر اليوم على يد قوات حكومية، ولم تعرف أسباب القتل. كما قتلت دورية للشرطة انتحاريا كان يقود سيارة مفخخة مستهدفا دوريتهم في حي الميثاق،وجرح 2 من المدنيين بسبب الحادث.

	From: Jany Kassab, Bangor, UK Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 10:20:23 EST Subject: UNESCO Project I am pleased to inform you that 8 Iraqi academics from the Colleges of Education and Science from the 4 Universities of Baghdad, Salahiddin, Basra and Anbar have arrived in Bangor to undertake a training programme on the Environment for a period of 21 Days. This is a part of a large UNESCO project on Training of Trainers of Teachers for Sustained Quality Education in Iraq. It is funded by a grant of US$2.325 million from the UN Development Group Iraq Trust Fund. The Iraqi Partners are the Ministry of HE&SR, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Planning and the Universities of Baghdad, Salahiddin, Basra and Anbar. There are 6 International Partners. They are the Universities of Bangor and Buckingham in the UK; University College Dublin in Ireland; University of Alberta in Canada; University of Foggia in Italy and University of Cairo in Egypt. The aim is to create a critical mass of highly qualified teacher trainers through strengthening the capacity of 300 university lecturers from Colleges of Science and Education in Iraq. It is planned to establish modern and updated curriculum that include new subjects such as peace and democracy, human rights, family education and environmental sciences. The project also includes developing a modern Strategic Plan for teacher education for the medium term. Most of the training has been completed. For example, English Language and Computing were held in Amman, Jordan by the British Council and CompuTeach Company respectively. Mathematics Training was held jointly at Buckingham and Bangor Universities, Physics was held at University College Dublin, Chemistry and Biology at Alberta University, peace, Democracy and Human rights at Foggia and Cairo Universities. Two senior academics will be arriving shortly in Bangor University to undertake 6 month training on Strategic Planning. I have been acting as an advisor to the Commission of 5 from the Ministry of HE&SR, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Planning for developing a Medium Term National Strategy. Professors Mohammed Al-Rubaie and Sabah Jassim and myself with colleagues from other international universities are on the Steering Committee for the project. So far training and other activities are progressing reasonably well with considerable support from the International University Partners. Series of explosions involves churches in Mosul and Baghdad
Several churches were destroyed by a series on explosions in Baghdad and Mosul Governorates today. Among these churches were Mar (St) Gorgis, Roman orthodox in Baghdad and Mar (St) Polis for the Chaldean Catholics in Mosul in addition to Maryam Al-Athra'a (Virgin Mary) Church in Al-Noor district in Mosul. Several casualties were reported. These explosions coincided with a series of threats to the remaining Christian families in the city that either they convert to Islam or be killed. Virgin Mary Church in Mosul was destroyed by a bomb in a car parked in front of the church. Serious damage was reported and one church guard was wounded.

The explosions in Baghdad were carried out using car bombs and targeted Mar (St) Gorgis church in Al-Ghadeer district, Roman Orthodox in Al-Tayaran square, and Mariam's Daughters Chaldean Nuns in Al-Noor district. The explosions took place at different times of the day.

Marked damage to the Church of Mar (St) Polis in Al-Muhandiseen district in Mosul
At 3.00 p, this afternoon (Sunday 6th January 2008), a car bomb exploded targeting Mar (St) Gorgis Church in Al-Muhandiseen (Engineers) district of Mosul. Half an hour later, another car bomb hit the Virgin Mary Church for the Assyrians and the Banat Mariam of the Chaldeans Convent. Four people were wounded and significant material damage was reported.
Also an explosive device was found targeting Misketta church in Al-Sa'a district in the centre of Mosul.

Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Insurgent groups attacked on Sunday four churches for Iraqi Christian minority in the city of Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, a provincial police source said.

A car bomb parked near the Maryam al-Adhra' Church northeastern of Mosul detonated, wounding four people and damaging parts of the building, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another booby-trapped car parked near the Mar Yousif Church in the Muhandiseen neighborhood in northern the city detonated and damaged outer fence and parts of the church, the source said.

In western Mosul, an explosive charge went off in a monastery in the Mosul al-Jadida neighborhood, damaging part of the deserted building without human casualty, he said.

A fourth bomb attack took place in the Meskantah Church in the Khazraj neighborhood in central the city, causing damages in the building, added the source.

The attacks against the Christian minority came as part of the religious and sectarian violence that ravaged the Iraqi cities, including Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad.

شهد اليوم السادس من كانون الثاني في وقت واحد تقريبا تفجير عدة كنائس في محافظتي بغداد والموصل ومنها كنيسة مار كوركيس والروم الارثدوكس في بغداد ومار بولص للكلدان الكاثوليك في الموصل اضافة إلى كنيسة مريم العذراء في حي النور في افادت الانباء عن سقوط عدد من الاصابات .. وتزامنت التفجيرات مع ارسال التهديدات للعوائل المسيحية المتبقية في المدينة اما بتركها او اعتناق الدين الاسلامي ، وذكر ت المصادر ان كنيسة مريم العذراء في حي النور بالموصل قد تم تفجيرها بسيارة مفخخة مركونة امام باب الكنيسة وان تفجيرها الحق اضرارا مادية كبيرة فيما كانت الاصابات جريحا واحد من افراد الحراسة وسنوافيكم بالتقرير اللاحق اكثر تفصيلا

.تعرضت كنائس عدة في بغداد وموصل صباح اليوم الى سلسلة من التفجيرات باسيارت مفخخة وقذاف فقد تم استهداف وكنيسة مار كوركيس في حي الغدير وكنيسة الروم الارثودوكس في ساحة الطيران ودير رهبات بنات مريم الكلدانيات في الزعفرانية بغداد ودير رهبات الكاترينيات في الموصل وكنيسة مار بولص بموصل ودير رهبات بنات مريم الكلدانيات في حي النور وقد وقعت التفجيرات صباح هذا اليوم وباوقات متقاربة .....

استهدفت الساعة الثالثة من عصر اليوم الاحد 6 \ 1 سيارة مفخخة كنيسة مار بولص في حي المهندسين في الموصل أسفر الانفجار عن اضرار مادية دون وقوع خسائر في الارواح .

بعد نصف ساعة من انفجار كنيسة مار بولص استهدفت سيارة اخرى كنيسة مريم العذراء للاثوريين ودير بنات مريم الكلدانيات في منطقة حي الشهداء اسفر الانفجار عن إصابة اربعة جرحى و اضرار مادية في بوابة الكنيسة .

كما تناقلت الانباء عن وجود عبوة استهدفت كنيسة مسكنته في منطقة الساعة

	خاص.و.أ.عراقيون-الموصل-(تفجير ثمانية عبوات ناسفة والعثور على جثتين) صرح مصدر في شرطة نينوى لمراسل وكالة أنباء عراقيون بأن الشرطة العراقية فككت عبوة ناسفة اليوم الأثنين 7/1 كانت موضوعة تحت عجلة تعود لعقيد في شرطة نينوى في منطقة باب لكش جنوب مدينة الموصل مما أدى إلى تدمير العجلة بالكامل.. وعلى صعيد متصل علمت وكالة أنباء عراقيون من نفس المصدر بتفكيك الشرطة العراقية لسبع عبوات ناسفة اليوم الاثنين 7/1 في قضاء تلعفر غرب مدينة الموصل وأضاف المصدر أن الشرطة ألقت القبض على إثنين من منفذين زرع العبوات. وكذلك علمت وكالة أنباء عراقيون من شهود عيان بعثور الشرطة على جثتين مجهولتي الهوية اليوم الاثنين 7/1 في حي الميثاق غرب مدينة الموصل.

	13:39 - Large scale random arrests in Mosul today by the police. - Unknown gunmen this morning killed a police personnel and stole his car in Garaj Al-Shimal area. The roads leading to the area were sealed off by the police. - 13:38 - US forces kill a armed man who was setting up an explosive device last evening in Al-Baath district, east of Mosul. 7:37 The arrest took place today of Adnan Khalil Al-farej, the leader of Al-Qa'ida organisation for Mosul and Tikreet Governorate at the educational Complex region of Mosul. 7:36 Three bodies were found in different parts of Mosul today. One of the dead belonged was that of private in the Iraqi Army and was found in Wadi Iqab region. The other two were unidentified and found near the pharmaceutical factory on Tel Kaif highway north of Mosul.
	2/1/2008 13:39 خاص – و.أ.عراقيون – الموصل (مقتل شرطي وسرقة سيارته والشرطة تقوم بحملة اعتقالات واسعة ) لقي احد عناصر الشرطة مصرعه على يد مسلحين مجهولين اليوم الاربعاء 2 كانون الثاني وقال مصدر في شرطة نينوى ان مسلحين مجهولين اغتالوا احد عناصر الشرطة من الفوج الخامس في منطقة كراج الشمال ثم قاموا بسرقة سيارته، وعلى اثر هذا الحادث اغلقت قوات الشرطة الشوارع المؤدية الى المنطقة وقامت بحملة اعتقالات عشوائية بحثاً عن المسلحين 13:38 خاص – و.أ.عراقيون – الموصل (القوات الأمريكية تقتل مسلحاً كان يحاول زرع عبوة ناسفة في شرقي الموصل ) صرح مصدر في شرطة نينوى أن القوات الأمريكية قتلت مسلحاً كان يقوم بزرع عبوة ناسفة ليلة أمس الثلاثاء في منطقة حي البعث شرقي الموصل . 7:37 خاص- .أ.عراقيون –الموصل (شرطة نينوى: اعتقال القائد العسكري لتنظيم القاعدة في الموصل وتكريت) قال مصدر رسمي في شرطة نينوى اليوم الثلاثاء 1 كانون الثاني ان الشرطة اعتقال عدنان خليل الفرج القائد العسكري لتنظيم القاعدة في الموصل وتكريت ، وأضاف المصدر ان قوة من شرطة نينوى اعتقلت الفرج في إحدى المطاعم في منطقة المجموعة الثقافية شمال الموصل . 7:36 خاص- .أ.عراقيون –الموصل (العثور على ثلاث جثث في مناطق متفرقة من الموصل) عثرت الأجهزة الأمنية في محافظة نينوى على ثلاث جثث إحداها لجندي عراقي وجدت جثته في منطقة وادي عكاب والجثتين الأخريين مجهولتي الهوية عثر عليهما قرب معمل الأدوية على طريق تلكيف شمال مدينة الموصل .

	1/1/2008 13:36 خاص – و.أ.عراقيون – الموصل (ستة جرحى بينهم امرأة جراء قصف المروحيات الأمريكية على أحياء في الموصل) 11:13 علم مراسل أنباء عراقيون أن 6 مدنيين جرحوا بينهم امرأة اليوم الثلاثاء 1 كانون الثاني اثر قصف جوي قامت به المروحيات الأمريكية على منطقة حي الثورة غرب الموصل. خاص - و.أ.عراقيون - الموصل (اعتقال مسلح والاستيلاء على عجلة كان يستقلها بعد ضبط أوراق ومستمسكات مزورة كان معه) صرح مصدر رسمي في شرطة نينوى اليوم 1 كانون الثاني، ان الشرطة اعتقلت مسلحاً واستولت على عجلته، بعد أن ضبطت معه أوراقا ومستمسكات مزورة، إضافة إلى أسلاك تفجير في منطقة الزهور شمال شرق الموصل.
